When to Seek In-Person Care

Telehealth is not appropriate for all circumstances. Our team will always prioritize the child's health, wellness, and safety. If we are unable to confidently diagnose or treat a patient during a video call, we will provide the next steps so the child can receive appropriate care.

If the child is showing life-threatening symptoms such as difficulty breathing, excessively high fever, or dehydration, or if he or she has broken bones or serious injuries, then the parent or guardian should call 911.

Offering Remote Child Health Care in Juneau and Surrounding Areas

It is the goal of Alaska Children’s to create healthier futures for children in our state. The best way to do that is to ensure that all families have access to a range of child medical care options in Juneau, Alaska.

Juneau is one of the most populous cities in Alaska. Yet, because of geography and roadworks, the city is like an island, with no roads connecting Juneau to other parts of the state. Although there are medical providers in the city, having access to remote child health care in Juneau is a win for families. These options include non-traditional hours and don’t require a trip via car, plane, or boat.

Our pediatric telemedicine option serves the entire Juneau area - and surrounding towns, like Haines and Skagway, that are rural and spread out over far distances. Kids in these areas need medical care, and when you need it for your child, urgent care online in Alaska is now a video call away.

How Does Pediatric Telemedicine Work for Children in Juneau?

Connecting a child in Juneau with virtual urgent care is simple - just follow these steps!

Book an appointment online. Same-day appointments are often available.

The parent is sent a secure video link. When it’s time for the appointment to begin, click on the link on a smartphone, tablet, or computer.

A pediatric specialist makes introductions and then asks about the child’s symptoms and health history.

Next is a visual exam. The provider will offer directions to get a clear view of your child’s symptomatic areas. For example, if a child has a sore throat, the provider will need the patient (or the patient’s parent) to position the camera to see if there is mucus, redness, or sores in the mouth (in cases like this, a flashlight might be needed). If a child has a wound on the leg, the provider will ask to see it from different angles. Simple instructions will be provided.

Once the provider has made a diagnosis, they will create a care plan. This will include the next steps, and if a prescription is needed, it can be sent electronically to your local pharmacy. The provider will also advise if in-person medical attention is needed.

Most visits take 15 to 20 minutes from start to finish. While fast, this form of care is needed and beneficial. Our team at Alaska Children’s Urgent Care and Outreach is confident that accurate diagnoses, effective treatments, and premium care are possible with telemedicine. This is a true clinical experience.
