Alaska School Pediatric Telemedicine for Families

When your child’s school calls to say they’re not feeling well, you shouldn’t have to choose between leaving work and leaving your child without care. Alaska Children’s Urgent Care and Outreach offers Alaska school pediatric telemedicine that connects your child with a board-certified pediatric provider by video during school hours. No early pickup, no disrupted day.

A virtual sick visit for school-age kids in Alaska means your child stays at school, gets seen by a real pediatric provider through the school nurse, and you stay connected from wherever you are. Register once, and your child is covered every school day.

What Is School-Based Virtual Care?

School-based virtual care is a program where the school nurse connects your child with a board-certified pediatric provider by video while they’re at school. Your child is assessed and treated without leaving campus. You can join the video visit remotely from home or work, and written discharge instructions are sent directly to you after every visit.
When a prescription is needed, it goes directly to your pharmacy. Your child’s school nurse coordinates the entire visit; all you need to do is register your child in advance so they’re ready to be seen the moment they need care.

How Does School-Based Virtual Care Work?

Getting started is simple. Here is how the program works from registration through your child’s first visit:

Register Your Child

Complete the secure online registration form. This one-time step enrolls your child in the program and is required before any visit can take place.

Nurse Initiates the Visit

When your child is sick or hurt at school, the school nurse pages our on-call telemedicine coordinator. As an online doctor for children in Anchorage and across Alaska, our K-12 telehealth team is available Monday through Friday, 8am to 4pm.

Video Visit

Your child connects with a board-certified pediatric provider by video. You are welcome to join the call remotely from home, work, or wherever you are. No app download is needed.

Plan, Prescribe, and Follow Up

The provider gives a diagnosis and care plan. Prescriptions go directly to your pharmacy. Written discharge instructions are sent to you. Follow-up visits are coordinated through the school nurse.

Why School-Based Virtual Care Matters for Alaska Families

Across Alaska, school nurses do an extraordinary job caring for students throughout the day. But when a child needs to be seen by a pediatric provider, the path forward hasn’t always been clear. In many communities, especially rural ones, there may not be a pediatric provider nearby, and reaching one during school hours has historically meant sending a child home, waiting for a parent to take time off work, and hoping the illness doesn’t get worse before the appointment.

Alaska Children’s Urgent Care and Outreach was built to change that. Our team developed this program in partnership with the American Academy of Pediatrics and has worked with school districts across Alaska to make connecting kids to doctors in remote Alaska a reality, not a goal. We have seen firsthand how access to care during the school day means children recover faster, miss fewer days, and stay on track.

This program is available to families in Anchorage and is expanding to school districts statewide. Whether your child attends a school in Anchorage or in a community hours from the nearest clinic, our board-certified pediatric team is available by video, Monday through Friday, 8am to 4pm.
